Agricultural Society (DLG) shows that almost half of agricultural businesses in Germany have already explored or plan to implement AI applications.
This trend marks a significant shift away from traditional methods toward digitally supported farming.
Artificial intelligence offers numerous applications that can enhance the efficiency and sustainability of agriculture. In smart irrigation, AI optimizes water distribution by analyzing weather data and soil moisture. For example, an AI-controlled irrigation system can adjust water supply to the plants' exact needs, conserving resources and boosting yields. In livestock farming, AI systems monitor animal behavior to detect health issues early, improving animal welfare. AI also has great potential in climate and weather prediction, helping to optimize sowing, harvesting, and reduce pesticide use, benefiting the environment.
The implementation of modern technology is already well advanced. From drones monitoring fields to self-driving tractors and milking robots in livestock farming, the technologies are diverse. These systems help reduce labor while increasing efficiency. For example, milking robots automate daily milking, saving valuable work hours. However, challenges remain, such as high costs. For instance, a self-driving tractor can cost up to €300,000, which poses a significant hurdle for smaller farms, with 75% of respondents citing high investment costs as the main obstacle.
For small and medium-sized farms, there are practical approaches to implementing AI technologies. A first step could be using free or low-cost software solutions for data collection and analysis. This might include simple weather apps or soil moisture sensors, which are available from around €100. Another approach could be taking advantage of funding programs or government subsidies specifically designed to support digitization in agriculture. Many countries offer programs to assist with AI investments, helping to ease the financial burden.
Another area where AI is making great progress is in promoting biodiversity on farmland. With the help of intelligent systems, farmers can target weeds that are harmful to crops, reducing the need for pesticides. This helps increase biodiversity and lowers environmental impacts. The European Union has set a goal to halve pesticide use by 2030. AI can assist in achieving this goal by enabling more precise pesticide application, thereby reducing agriculture's ecological footprint.
Digitization and the use of Artificial Intelligence offer enormous opportunities for agriculture. These technologies help make operations more efficient, protect the environment, and promote biodiversity. While challenges like high investment costs and complex systems remain, advancements show that agriculture is moving toward a sustainable and productive future.
